Dog Training Tips & Guidelines:
Learning To Read Your Dog

Learning to read your dog is imperative as there is an art to training dogs and there are correct ways, as well as incorrect ways. A frequently unconsidered aspect of teaching your dog is how they communicate with to you. If you wish to be successful in training your dog, you’ll need to place a lot of emphasis on learning to read your dog and his body language when he communicates with you.

You can only establish a close relationship when you understand your dog and he understands you, at which time you will be able to recognize his non-verbal body language.

A great way to start learning to read your dog and their body language is to observe their interaction with other animals. This is an additional advantage that you’ll acquire from properly socializing your dog.

So what things should you be alert for particularly? Take notice of how your dog reacts to the motions of other dogs. How does he greet dogs he knows? Dogs he isn't familiar with?

Consider these questions while you are learning to read your dog's communication language and behaviors. Reading books about wolf behavior is something to consider which might greatly increase your comprehension of dog communication.

Why examine wolf behavior? Wolf and dog behavior are closely related. Insomuch as they are both so alike, the interactions of wolves gives us the opportunity to monitor their communication habits with no personal interference.

Most dogs, if not each and every one of them, possess the habit of licking people's faces and mouths. You might not realize why dogs do this, but close examination of wolves has displayed that wolf puppies are fed by the elder wolves of the pack through regurgitation. Face and mouth licking persists as they become older as a method of greeting another animals.

Investing the time learning to read your dog by closely watching his communication behavior will allow you to understand him better and the relationship you share will grow even stronger!
