5 Best Dog Training Tips
Successfully training a dog is not as difficult as you might think. All that's required is implementing some simple training tactics along with a good helping of dedication and patience to successfully train your dog.
Our 5 best tips for successful dog training:
Best Dog Training Tips: Focus on one command at a time:
Keep each lesson focused on a single training command. If your pet has
difficulty learning a particular command, stay with it until they do
it correctly repeatedly. Adding another command at this time typically
results in confusion and slows the training process. Be sure to remember
and start with the basic dog training commands. Come, sit, stay, down
etc. you'll have plenty of time to teach tricks later. Dogs are
always happier if they know what you want them to do.
Best Dog Training Tips: One person should be responsible for training:
Avoid confusion and allow your dog to learn his commands easily by having
the primary owner be responsible for giving lessons. Having several
people training at the same time will only cause confusion and could
stop their progress in its tracks.
Best Dog Training Tips: Using positive reinforcements:
Use positive reinforcements when your dog does something correctly
during a training session. Give them a treat and really make a fuss,
letting them know they did it right. That way she will want to do it again.
If your dog has difficulty understanding during lessons don't rush, it
takes time and repetition to successfully train a dog. And don't be
overly harsh especially during the early stages of training, you could
make your dog fearful which will reduce her willingness to learn.
Best Dog Training Tips: Always be cheerful while executing commands:
While giving lessons you should keep verbal tones cheerful so the
dog will willingly carry out your commands. Most dogs respond more easily
to a low and coaxing tone rather than a shout. By shouting you could
easily startle or even frighten your dog making him become unresponsive
to any further commands. It's always best for you and dog to keep things
on the happy side whenever possible.
Best Dog Training Tips: Be creative and train in different places:
Visit a park or simply a take a walk through the neighborhood. You
should always use a variety of training experiences. Keeping your
training sessions confined to your home or any area which doesn't allow your dog
to adjust to new circumstances and meeting new people.
Dog training can sometimes be perplexing, however when finished you and your dog will be much happier for it. A well trained and socialized dog is always a happier dog. And who knows, all the training may someday save his life or maybe even yours.
Kindly allow me to relate a short story from the pages of my dog history. Back in the mid seventies I was very active in hunting dog field trials.
As pointing dogs are breed and trained to find game by using their nose they sometimes find things they don't necessarily want to find such as rattlesnakes. Many trainers use a system called snake breaking to teach dogs that this is not a good smell and to leave them alone.
While working a younger member of our four legged family which had been snake broken a couple of weeks earlier I downed a bird and she refused to go into the brush after it, which was a problem we were experiencing way to often at the time. So I simply caught hold of her collar and began making a forced retrieve.
As I approached the brush pile I heard a very distinctive sound which immediately made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up. Oh yes it was one of mother natures little crawling creatures which I really prefer to just leave alone. So I quickly stepped way back and gave my now favorite pup the praising of her lifetime.
So the lessons we came away with were:
A job well done brings on very positive praise so the dog will enjoy
doing it again and again.
A trainer or handler should listen to their dog, because the dog is sometimes smarter than him.
It is absolutely possible that your well trained dog could likely save your life if your smart enough to listen.
And, yes you can bet your last dollar on the fact that from that day forward if she said no I'm not going in their I said good girl and went on to find another bird. ;>)
